Chapter Eleven

Presley

I walk out of the nightclub in a daze. My body is buzzing as if I had consumed alcohol. Part of me didn’t want to leave. I wanted to drag Axe to the nearest bathroom and let him have his wicked way with me, but I also need to process everything.

As amazing as I feel, I know I will be overthinking later. This changes a lot of things for me.

The drive home takes about ten minutes and by the time I park, I am ready to fall right into my bed. I don’t even plan to shower. Just strip out of my clothes and crash. I can’t even remember feeling this exhausted before. I just hope the baby is tired too, so we can sleep all night. Lately I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night and struggling to fall back asleep. The only time I really sleep through the night is if Axe is there. My sweetling even lets me sleep then, too.

I unlock my door, walk in, and immediately freeze, the hairs on the back of my neck rising as an icy chill works its way down my spine. There is a bouquet of white roses on my kitchen island. My favorite.

My pulse picks up. Someone’s been in here—no. Someone is in here.

Their shadow shines from the hall directly across to the windows in the living room. They shift slightly. I take a slow step back, my foot shifting, ready to sprint back out the open door.

What do I do?

Scream. Run. Dive for a knife. Call Axe.

I shift back again. Inhale, exhale, run.

“Don’t.”

“B-Ben?” My eyes burn with unshed tears. My stomach drops, knowing this isn’t going to be good. “Why are you here?” I ask, even though I know why. He’s here for me.

He doesn’t move. He doesn’t speak.

“Ben?” My voice quivers. This is bad. Something is really wrong. Did I fuck up? All those notes were just a game. He never meant anything by them, right?
